UPA Stands For

UPA stands for United Progressive Alliance. This is a political coalition in India, primarily led by the Indian National Congress (INC).

Formation of UPA, UPA Stands For

The UPA was formed after the 2004 general elections when no party won a majority. The Congress party, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, formed the UPA by aligning with like-minded regional and smaller parties.

Major Work and Achievements:

During its tenure in government, particularly from 2004-2014.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA): A significant job guarantee scheme aimed at enhancing livelihood security in rural areas.
Right to Information Act (RTI): This law empowered citizens by allowing them to request information from government offices, improving transparency and accountability.
National Food Security Act: This act aimed to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two-thirds of India’s population.
Right to Education Act (RTE): It made free and compulsory education a fundamental right for children aged 6 to 14 years.
Introduction of Aadhar: A unique identity project that aimed to give every resident of India a unique identification number.
Women’s Reservation Bill (proposed): A bill to reserve 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and all state legislative assemblies for women. While it passed the Rajya Sabha, it was not passed in the Lok Sabha.

Leadership:

Sonia Gandhi was the chairperson of the UPA for most of its existence.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India under the UPA from 2004 to 2014.

The UPA remained in power for two terms (2004–2009 and 2009–2014) but faced criticisms during its second term due to various allegations of corruption, which eventually led to its defeat in the 2014 general elections.
